Immigrants will raise population faster than forecast
Britain's population is projected to rise by more than seven million in the next 25 years - a far greater increase than official forecasts have previously predicted.
More than half the extra population will be the direct result of immigration, according to figures published yesterday by the Office for National Statistics.
Total numbers are expected to rise from just under 60 million today to 67 million by 2031 and 70 million by the 2060s.

The predictions are even greater than those made by the Migrationwatch UK think-tank, whose forecasts have been dismissed in the past as alarmist. Sir Andrew Green, the chairman of Migrationwatch, said the figures were ''staggering''. He added: ''They totally demolish the Government's claim that it has a 'managed migration' policy. In fact they show that immigration into the UK is out of control.''

''This enormous level of immigration is directly contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of the population and has been allowed to develop without any real discussion about the long term consequences in terms of community cohesion, quality of life and practical matters such as housing where we already have major problems of supply,'' Sir Andrew said.
Valerie Stevens, of the Optimum Population Trust, said: "The situation is getting much worse much faster. We are faced with a population explosion yet ministers present their plans for mass housing to accommodate it, as if the new homes and their occupants existed in a vacuum.''

En 31-årig kroat er idømt 12 års fængsel efter at han forsøgte at køre ind i Sverige med en bil fuld af våben, sprængstoffer og narkotika. Bilen blev efter en tur gennem Danmark stoppet på den svenske side af Øresundsbroen. Det var noget af et arsenal, de svenske toldere opdagede, da de i april i år vinkede en bil ind til siden ved betalingsanlægget Lernacken.
Tre automatvåben, lyddæmpere, ammunition, 12 håndgranater, en større mængde sprængstof, op mod ti kilo amfetamin, godt to kilo hash og en mindre mængde herion, var lasten.
- Jeg mener, at det er meget alvorligt, at vore toldtjenestemænd udsættes for denne her type eksplosiver og automatvåben, sagde chefen for det svenske toldvæsens rejsekontrol, Karl Gunnheden, efter fundet og talte om en "rullende bombe".
Bilens 31-årige chauffør er ved Malmø Tingsret blevet idømt 12 års fængsel, og tre nordmænd sidder stadig fængslet i sagen i Drammen og Sarpsborg.
De tre mænd på 25, 26 og 44 år - alle fra Balkanområdet - har siddet fængslet siden maj, og er mistænkt for at skulle tage imod kroaten og lasten i Norge, skriver vg.no.
