Hovedbibliotekets valgkamp for Ritt Bjerregaard

Send them back: Dutch integration minister wants to deport immigrant petty criminals
by Richard Walker and Kim Renfrew, 17 October 2005
Dutch immigration minister Rita Verdonk is pushing through new measures to expel all foreigners who commit crimes, irrespective of how serious they are.
Under current law, moves can only be made to deport an immigrant from the Netherlands if they are imprisoned for serious offences, and the length of time they have already spent in the Netherlands must also be taken into account.
Draconian laws
Now civil liberties groups are aghast at what they say is a draconian measure, and a step in the wrong direction for the country, which is trying to tackle the problem of minority integration.
Critics also say the new plans are unworkable and little more than headline-grabbers. Amsterdam-based immigration lawyer Michiel Tjebbes told Radio Netherlands that he thought the new law was impracticable, too:
“I think it's excessive and I doubt very much whether it will be effective. I believe there’s a very strong argument against this new policy, [which] in quite a few aspects, will [clash] with international obligations.”
Exaggerated attitude
Compared to legislation in the rest of Europe, Mr Tjebbes could only think of one other comparable approach to dealing with criminality among immigrant populations:
“The Danes have a very strong anti-xenophobic policy and legislation, but the only country that I know of that has a very, very strict exaggerated attitude towards foreigners who commit criminal offences is Denmark. There is no other country in Europe at all that is comparable in any respect to what the Dutch minister is planning to do.”
